Line Scale Form
Together with Altadena Eye Care’s owner, Line Scale Form transformed a former food service venue into a boutique optometry office. Through a series of investigative conversations, Dr. Herrington described her needs and desires for the new 1600sf space. Sketches prepared by LSF expressed these requirements in terms of spatial, functional, and efficiency attributes.
Ultimately, the functions focused on eye health (clinical) are located ‘back of house’, separate from functions related to appearance (optical, or aesthetics). The use of light is instrumental to optometry, and to the designed space. Backlit ceiling ‘clouds’ and diffuse natural light (via the space’s storefront wall) provide illumination and inspiration. Showcased by specialty lighting, the retail frame display wall holds 600 glasses frames. Glossy surfaces and a glass infused front desk enhance the simple, clean design. This ‘jewelbox’ of a space is anchored by the front desk and a ‘lens bar’, equipped for final fittings or adjustments for eyeglasses.
The ocular examination spaces are planned for functional efficiency. Two exam rooms, a visual fields room, and a lab space are all entered from a central ‘workup space’, where multiple preliminary optical tests are performed
